The first boardwalk was in Atlantic City, New Jersey and opened June 26, 1870. A boardwalk is a wooden walkway, usually along a beach. The East Coast of the United States has more boardwalks than anywhere else in the world. The feel of the fresh ocean breeze, hear the seagulls, and aromas of the snack bar grill. ![]() Bayberry Gallery Vintage Postcards Page Lucy The Margate Elephant was built in 1881, and considered the Eighth Wonder of The World. She stands 65-feet tall, and weighs in at 90 tons. Lucy originally lived in Margate, but in 1970 she moved to the Atlantic City Boardwalk where she currently resides. In 1974 she was re-opened to the public and has since been restored. Tours go through her and up to the top for a view of the Atlantic City Boardwalk, and the New Jersey shore.
