Inside Kaleidoscopes

The kaleidoscope was invented in 1816 by the Scottish Sir David Brewster (1781-1868). Kaleidoscopes were popular parlor toys during the Victorian Era. For many of us, our first experience with a kaleidoscope was having fun with the old "Stevens" plastic toy as children. Kaleidoscope crafting became popular again in the 1970's as an art form. Kaleidoscopes are a great way to reduce stress, and have recently been found to be helpful as a form of as therapy for some autistic children.

The basic kaleidoscope is made with a combination of mirrors, optic lenses and beads. Housing shapes, bead color combinations, and interior designs can differ. Combinations are as varied as the changing views from within. I took the pictures on this page inside some of the kaleidoscopes I have collected over the years. I have recently made these prints available for sale.
